My own credits/billing

In this post I will include my billings I have created for my poster and my film.

Billing/credit explanation.

Having looked at two billings/credits from two posters belonging to the genre of psychological horror, I have noticed that they both form a similair pattern. Both Billings/credits start of with the production/distribution companies. Triangle is an independent film and therefore has lots of distribution/production companies, and on the billings/credits the first few names are production/distribution companies. Both billings then mention the film and several actors starring in it. Identity mentions the costume designer and film editor, but both billings mention the director of photography, producer and director. Identity also mentions the composer and the story idea.
By looking at 2 billings/credits, I found that they all end with the director/writer of the film.

In the next few posts I have analysed billings/credits in order for me to understanding the convetions of the billings and the order in which it is set out in.

Companies to produce my film

Looking at other psycholigical horror movies, I have to decide on what company is appropriate to produce and distribute my film. I came up with three appropriate companies.

Production: Miramax in association with Dimension films

Miramax films is an American entertainment company known for distributing independent and foreign films. For its first 14 years the company was privately owned by its founders, Bob and Harvey Weinstein. In 1993, the company was acquired by The Walt Disney Company. Previous films include The Others, Don't be afraid of the Dark, Scary Movie 4, Hostage, Darkness and City of God. Miramax don't just produce films that are psychological horrors but they produce independent type films.

Production: Dimension Films

Dimension films is a motion picture unit currently a part of The Weinstein Company. It was formely used as Bob Weinstein's label within Miramax Films, to produce and release genre films. The Weinstein Brothers took this label with them when they departed the Disney-owned Miramax in October 2005.The studio's movie franchises include the later Halloween films, Children of the Corn, Scream, Spy Kids and Scary Movie. All films released by Dimension Films prior to October 1, 2005, remain the property of Miramax Films.

Distribution: MGM

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc (MGM) is an American media company, involved primarily in production and distrubution of films and television programs. MGM was founded in 1924 when the entertainment entrepreneur Marcus Leow gained control of Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures Corporation and Louis B. Mayer Pictures. Films include Poltergeist, Jeepers Creepers, Amity Ville Horror, Lucky Number Slevin and Premonition.

Focus Group - Tagline

I conducted a focus group on my taglines. I took a sample of 28 people, a mixture between male and female aged 15-24 as this is my target audience.
‘What if your dream house turned into a nightmare’ - 5.5.
‘The perfect family. The Dream house. The ultimate nightmare.’ - 7
‘ You’re never alone, in your own home’ - 3.5
‘What if you weren’t alone, and someone was always haunting you’ - 3
‘They always come back and find you’ - 4
‘They never moved out’ - 5
‘Sooner or later they’ll come back to haunt you’ - 6
‘New house. Fresh start. They’re coming back.’ - 4.5
‘Fear is never far away.’ - 6
‘They’re ready for round 2’ - 4

My top 5 taglines that were chosen were: The Perfect family. The Dream House. The Ultimate nightmare (7), Sooner or later they'll come back to haunt you (6), Fear is never far away (6), What if your dream house turned into a nightmare (5.5), They never moved out (5). I will consider the results when making my final decision in the upcoming days.

10 potential taglines for my film HOUSE II.

After looking at several taglines, I came up with a few for my film using the research I did on several taglines. Looking at the taglines helped me gain a better understanding of what to expect in taglines for certain genre's.

Creating my tagline

The teaser trailer I’m making is a psychological horror, in order for me to create my own tagline for my poster of my film ‘House II’ I looked at several other posters within the same genre of psychological horrors, listed in the blog below. I found lots of similarities within the taglines on the poster:
- References to death
- Taglines directly referencing the audience such as ‘You’
- References to mystery – a sense of mystery
- Taglines directly talking about someone controlling you, ‘they’, ‘forecast’etc:
- Lots of words that make the audience scared
- Lots of references to threat and danger.

POSTER . PIRANHA 3D .

I was really inspired by the tagline on this poster, I liked the punchiness of the tagline. I encorporated this idea into my tagline.

POSTER . INSIDIOUS .

This poster really made me think about what sort of picture I wanted to put on my poster. I liked the idea of the boy infront of the house. I noticed that a lot of horror posters have a small image of a person behind an isolated scary image.

POSTER . THE WOMAN .

Each poster I have looked at share many similarties, as they all belong to the same genre. I can see certain similarities in these horror posters which will in the end help me into developing my own movie poster. The tagline in this poster is to create intensity and scare the audience. The colours on the poster creates a scary atmosphere. The red and the black contrast well together to get the overall message to the audience.

POSTER . I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE.

What I noticed in a number of posters including this one was that there was a girl in an isolated setting. I noticed in a number of posters that there is always one person looking vulnerable and isolated in the poster. This is a convention I would like to use in my poster.

POSTER . DRAG ME TO HELL .

After looking through poster conventions I then decided to look at a number of posters and analye them in terms of genre conventions. I found many similarities in the way they address the audience. This is done through colour, through quality of the image and the setting and background.

In this poster I have noticed that she is in an isolated setting. The fire further shows that the film belongs to the horror genre. I noticed that isolated settings are the main focus in a lot of the posters that I looked at.

A list of all possible conventions that are found in posters:

·       Central image of recognisable stars/Eye candy.

·       Title of the film in big letters.

·       Websites.

·       Production logo’s.

·       Billing/credits.

·       Mise en scene/props.

·       Release date of when the film is coming out.

GREASE. POSTER CONVENTIONS

In the next few post I have looked at typical conventions found in posters.
I found that a lot of the posters share similar conventions, which helped me gain a better understanding of how to produce mine.
